Day 1
Arrival in Marrakech / Exploration of the red city and the Souk
Arrival at Marrakech airport in the morning.
Taxi transfer to the Riad*, in the Medina. We chose the Kasba district.
Tour the historic Medina of Marrakech. Visit the Koutoubia Mosque and the Bahia Palace.
We recommend that you take a 'Free Tour', where you will be told about the most emblematic places from the start, and you will enter some of them.
Lunch in a traditional Riad.
Lose yourself in the Medina Souk and its labyrinthine passages, where you will find all kinds of shops selling crafts, tea, and everything else you can imagine.
Dinner at Jemma el Fna square.
Be amazed by the nightlife of the square, which comes alive with all kinds of lights and sounds.
Day 2
Secret Garden / Modern part of Marrakech
Have a leisurely breakfast in your Riad.
Visit the Secret Garden, located in the Souk.
Visit the Badi Palace and its surrounding traditional streets, for us it was one of the most beautiful places in the city.
Walk through the modern area of Marrakech (Avenue Mohamed V and Mohamed VI). You will be struck by the drastic change compared to the Medina area.
Day 3
Desert Excursion: Ait Zineb
3-day excursion to the Essaouira Desert (Sahara) starting early in the morning. On this excursion you will stop at different places. It is definitely worth it.
First stop: Ait Zineb. An impressive village in the middle of the desert where important films and series such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones have been shot.
Spend the night in Tinghir.
Day 4
Desert Excursion: Toudra Gorge, arrival in the Desert
Toudgha el Ouila and Toudra Gorge. A spectacular place that you will never forget.
Arrive at the Sahara Desert and ride a camel to the camp at sunset. A unique and very relaxing experience.
In the Desert you can enjoy authentic Berber meals and experience local hospitality.
Don't forget to stop for a while to appreciate the stars in the middle of the desert.
Day 5
Desert excursion: quad biking through the dunes and back to Marrakech
Wake up in the Sahara Desert and enjoy the sunrise between the dunes.
Back on the bus, we had the option of taking a camel or a quad. Without hesitation we went on the quad and it was a brutal experience.
Transfer back to Marrakech.
Take advantage of the last night to walk around Marrakech and have dinner.
Day 6
Majorelle Gardens / Hammam bath / Return flight
Have breakfast at the Riad.
Visit the Majorelle Gardens, by Yves Saint Laurent.
Enjoy a bath and massage in a Hamman . Doing this before returning home is one of the best things you can do to arrive well relaxed. There are a wide variety of places you can go to and there are some where you can do it as a couple (man and woman).
Taxi transfer to Marrakech airport and return home.
*A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house that was once used by the most powerful families. Today they are offered as small Moroccan-style hotels with a few rooms run by the families themselves.
Final considerations
This itinerary will give you a unique experience that combines the cultural richness of Marrakech with the magic of the Sahara Desert.
Exchange your money for the national currency as soon as you arrive. There are many places where you cannot pay with a card. The cheapest place to exchange currency is in Jamaa el Fna Square.
Get a SIM card upon arrival in Morocco for added convenience. You can buy one at the airport or in any shop in the Medina.
If you go to Marrakech, be prepared to be sold everything and to have to haggle over the price of everything. When it comes to haggling, you can end up paying up to 20-30% of what they ask for.
If you have a few more days, we recommend you visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls.
Be sure to bring appropriate clothing for the desert, including light, warm clothing and sunscreen.
Don't hesitate to interact with the local people and learn about their culture.
Very important! Use bottled water for both drinking and brushing your teeth. Although we were not sure if the water was contaminated, we were advised to use bottled water for everything.
